Permits, Codes & Compliance
Navigate Michigan's commercial building permits, ADA requirements, fire codes, and inspection process — and why your general contractor should handle all of it.
The Permit Process at a Glance
1
Plan Review Submission
Your GC submits architectural and engineering drawings to the local building department for code review.
2
Permit Approval
Once plans are approved, building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical permits are issued. Timeline: 2–12 weeks.
3
Construction & Inspections
Work proceeds with scheduled inspections at each phase — foundation, framing, rough-in, and finals.
4
Certificate of Occupancy
After passing final inspection, the building department issues a CO allowing legal occupancy of the space.
